In science this week, the children were given a selection of musical instruments and were asked to come up with various big questions to do with pitch and vibrations that we could investigate as a whole class.

Some of the questions were:

What ways can we feel sound?

Why does sound echo in a larger room and not a small room? (Livia)

How does the shape of an instrument change the sound? (Ruben)

Do all vibrations feel the same? (Jess)

If you hit a drum with something bendy, will that change the sound? (Max)

How does the length or width effect the pitch?

If you put grains of rice on a drum and hit it, when will it stop vibrating?

Why do brass instruments make different pitches?
